Magazine Series #1 - 'VintageHair'

 

 

You could say that I am slightly addicted to magazines, it's the one thing I've constantly bought throughout my childhood to the present day. Now I've taken a turn from Barbie and Girl Talk and have been reading quite a few different styles, from gossip to extremely high end fashion. The library at uni also has a really varied selection so I've been reading quite a few recently, so thought I'd do a little magazine series and introduce you to some rather splendidio reads.

 

 

 

First up is VintageHair, As far as I am aware this magazine comes out 4 times a year and this issue is the Winter 2013 one and costs an extortionate £9.99! I don't think this magazine is very good value for money as it's really slim with a tiny 27 pages.

 

 

 

The beginning of the magazine shows all of the things you'll need to create the hairstyles, which is a simple thing to include but seriously helpful, as you don't want to be halfway through a look and realise you don't have everything you need.

 

 

 

 

The magazine includes popular hair styles from different decades, beginning with a picture of a style icon from the time wearing it and then a picture of how it's been updated for today by a modern icon. There is also a little about the hairstyle and why it was worn in that time because of what was occurring in society. This part is really interesting and even if you're not going to attempt the looks I'd recommend flipping through to read these as they are a good reference.

 

 

 

Then in an almost YouTube style there are snapshots of the stages for doing the hairstyles which also have a bullet point to go with them. They are very simple to follow and you can go as slow or fast as you want, unlike YouTube when you have to try to keep up or keep pausing the video. The last image is a close up of the look so you can see what you should achieve.

 

 

 

I'd definitely recommend this magazine to any vintage fanatic, or students studying hair/make-up or even fashion/costume design.
